The Community Development Programme Agency (CODEPA) is considered a reference in terms of Green and Organic development in Mauritius, Rodrigues and Africa by extension. Recipients of the Africa Leadership Award (NGO) and National Environment Award for Community Based Environmental Education for community leaders where representatives f Mauritius and Rodrigues have received capacity building in Organic Farming and related self help-community based in income generated activities for the most vulnerable groups including planters, women involved in subsistence agriculture and youth leaders.

For the sensitisation and implementation of Organic farming inclusive of food processing activities Rodriguans have been able to benefit greatly from  CODEPA's input which is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG's) whereby they have been able not only to cultivate Organic vegetables, citrus and Fruits with partial processing and pickles that was sold in Rodrigues and exported to Mauritius.

Our coordinator, Mr Andre Augustin, Rodriguan subject has been assigned the task to conduct follow up and monitoring.

 

It should be noted that though Rodrigues has embarked on the Organic farming options, there is still much to be done in terms of capacity building, sensitisation in  order to clarify the difference between Smart Agriculture and Organic farming which at time brings some confusion with regard to execution of projects.

 

Moreover, there is an urgent need to develop Rodrigues as a model for Organic farming, taking into consideration of its constraints and limitations of land and resources. This is where the Organic club and CODEPA intervention and experience in Organic farming becomes important for such development in Rodrigues.
